Activities

Stoke Gabriel Pre-school has a wide varied of resources that allow children to access a range of activities. These are planned theatrically and in conjunction with the children's interests, following the topic for the term.

Activities are planned as meet age six areas of age EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage):

  • Personal, Social and Emotional
  • Problem Solving
  • Communication, Language and Literacy
  • Knowledge and Understanding of the World
  • Physical Development
  • Creative Development

Each activity covers more than one area of developments and we work hard to make sure the children are provided all the necessary materials to explore each of these areas.

For example, some of the children had been involved in imaginary play set in a fire station and engine. We extended their interest via a new topic "people who help us". With the children, we set up the home corner into a fire station, providing them with writing materials such is note pads, white board, range of pens and chalks; communication tools such as telephone and walky-talky; dressing up including hard hats, firemen and doctors outfits; short pieces of hose.

Parallel to the home corner, we set out a selection of books and puzzles linked with firemen and emergency services and organised for our local PC to visit for a talk and a play with the children.

By taking the children's interest and developing in into a topic, we extended their exploration and developed an activity that allowed them as work on all six Areas of Development.

As well as planned activities, the children have independent access as books, mark-making materials, construction toys and other resources designed to promote fine motor skills. As our hall is restricted in size, we cannot put everything out for the children to freely choose from but will always be happy to take out anything they might like to play with.

The Orchard is used by the Pre-school to provide outdoor play and promote physical development using the adventure equipments and other resources such as bats and balls. We also try to find creative ways to encourage children to engage in a range of exciting and challenging activities outside in the same way as we do inside.

Our music, dance and sofa play sessions provide the children with opportunities to develop their large motor skills and work on their balance while experimenting with different ways to move, climb and roll no marker the weather.

Please note:

Our pre-school is a very creative one and we often get involved in rather messy activities. Even though we do use aprons and encourage the children to take care of their outfit, we cannot guarantee their clothes will not get dirty. So please make sure you send your child in clothes that are appropriate for such activities.
