Special Educational Needs Policy
Definition of SEN
- We aim to have regard to the DfEE code of Practice on special educational
needs
- We aim to ensure that all children have an equal opportunity to engage in
the curriculum
- We recognise that we need to consider each child's needs when planning our
curriculum.
- We aim to ensure that the needs of the children are identified and assessed
early and aim to provide support strategies.
- We work in partnership with parents/carers, keeping them fully involved in
their child's education.
- We believe in the involvement of the child and the importance of taking
their views into account.
Our Aims
- To provide welcome and appropriate learning opportunities for all children.
- Children with special needs are admitted to the pre-school after
consultation between parents, co-ordinators and SENCo.
- To provide for the developmental needs of all children in the group, to
monitor their progress and record them in each children's individual records.
The supervisor will note if this progress is considered adequate or not and
action will be taken if needed.
- Where a child's progress is considered inadequate, advice will be sought by
the supervisor or SENCo after consultation with the parents.
- Should the behaviour of the child give rise for immediate and significant
cause for concern, the SENCo will contact the LEA immediately to require
immediate assessment without the provision of the normal records and information.
- All children, irrespective of their special needs, are encouraged, wherever
possible and appropriate to participate in all the group's activities.
- All children who are identified as having a special educational need will
have an Individual Educational Plan (I.E.P) including details of long and short
term goals and the provision of a differentiated curriculum. The SENCo will also
review the ways in which each child with special educational needs is able to
access the whole curriculum.
- Our system of observation and record keeping, which operates in conjunction
with parents, enables us to monitor children's needs and progress on an individual
basis.
- All children's progress and files will be reviewed termly by all the staff
involved. The SENCo will be responsible for ensuring that the provision is
planned, implemented, monitored, evaluated and reviewed with the support and
input from all the staff employed at the pre-school.
- All adults working within the provision will be kept updated on expectations
and will also be responsible for the provision of support to all the children
with special needs.
